The sign on the hill overlooking SH1 is a reminder to passing motorist that there is a thriving prosperous town off the beaten track called Mosgiel.

Who would have thought 100 years go that the Mosgiel Railway
Station and one of the train carriages would be made redundant
and become a dining room and Function Centre.

From a man calling tickets please to what would you like to drink madam

Parts of the Taieri was a swamp and farmland for sheep and cattle and who would have thought that one day it would become the home of the Dunedin International Airport.

Air New Zealand replaces the horse and
carriage. Now boarding, no smoking and
fasten your seat belts ladies and gentlemen.

Even the Southern Man and his horse has
turned to bronze. |
Look - its all happening in Mosgiel
Mosgiel is one of the many towns along State Highway One that is affected
by the introduction of motorways that by-pass their town. Most of the towns
along SH1 grew with the introduction of the motor car and the railway.
One of the big growth areas in Mosgiel is manufacturing and many
industries have chosen Mosgiel as the ideal location to operate their business.
We are publishing this page to introduce you to some of
them. The first company we would like to tell you about is
Paynes Wholesalers Ltd. |

Derek Payne is the
founder and managing
director of
Paynes Wholesalers Ltd and Paynes Boats
& Fabrication Ltd. Derek’s first job after
leaving secondary school was with a well
known Otago firm John Chambers & Sons
in Dunedin. Derek was also the founder of
the Mosgiel Marine Centre before spending
25 years as the South Island Manager
for a national aluminium company.
In 2004 he saw a need in the market place
for manufacturing and distribution of
certain lines of aluminium products so he
purchased a building in Mosgiel and
started his own family business. With
Derek’s experience and connections in the
aluminium industry the company grew
rapidly and is now a leader in the marketing
and distribution of Aluminium sheet

I had a quick look around the Mosgiel and Timaru factories and what impressed me the most was the friendly attitude of the people in the company. The company's website has all you need to know about their products. www.paynes.co.nz
They are also agents for superior balestrades
Have a look at their website it has
some amazing aluminium products.

If you are looking for a nice clean quite place to stay in Mosgiel then I recommend
the Bonnie Knights Motels. Tiffany and Simon Mills are the new young hosts of the motels. Here is a link to their website

As I travel along SH1 on my journey from
Bluff to Cape Reinga I keep a sharp eye
out for something different. I found this
1918 Ford Model T in an old Garage in
East Taieri. It was originally owned by
Dave Gough who started the garage in
1921. It has been completely restored to its
original condition by his grandson Nevin
Gough.
